    CASE STUDY: How New York City got PPE to the people who need it most

    I wrote this case study for Medline chronicling the quick steps taken by Medline and the City of New York to not only find the appropriate space to house the inventory of PPE and other supplies the city had procured from the start of the pandemic, but to bring all this previously purchased inventory into Medline’s system and online platform. The inventory had to be accessible to and ordered by, as well as delivered on time to the municipal organizations—more than 1300 of them—that desperately needed them.

    This piece focuses on how health systems must rethink their supply chain strategies in order to focus on becoming more sustainable: First, they must prioritize resiliency in anticipation of the next public health crisis—climate change—while still managing their way through COVID. Secondly, they must reckon with their own role in the crisis as one of the world’s highest emitters of greenhouse gases by seriously factoring sustainability into the purchasing equation.
